. ATTENTION 2009-2010 CANDIDATES Below is some deadline information from the National Board fee processing team that you may find useful as it relates to the 2009-2010 candidates. All first-time candidates have to pay the nonrefundable $500 initial fee by January 31 or they will be forced withdrawn the second week of February. Every other type of candidate (retakes, renewal, TO!, FTCs who have paid the $500) will be offered a payment extension until February 28. NBPTS will notify candidates of the payment extension in a series of communications during the first two weeks of February. First-time candidates who selected the Extended Payment Option (EPO) will still have until March 15 to pay their balance. The EPO only extends the deadline for payment of the $2000 above the nonrefundable $500 initial fee. If the $500 is not paid by January 31, then the candidate will be forced withdrawn (see first bullet above) regardless of their selection of the EPO.

From its beginning, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) has had a clear vision of the potential impact that National Board Certification could have on promoting quality teaching and improved student learning in America’s schools. To achieve this vision, the NBPTS identified and committed itself to the following three-pronged mission: To establish high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do; To develop and operate a national voluntary system to assess and certify teachers who meet these standards; and To advance related education reforms for the purpose of improving student learning.
In response to the NBPTS mission, the 2000 Kentucky General Assembly, via KRS 161.131, established the goal that by the year 2020, there will be at least one NBPTS-certified teacher in every public school in Kentucky. For more information about the National Board certification process, please visit: http://www.kyepsb.net/certification/nationalboard.asp, or www.nbpts.org, or call Teresa Moore at EPSB at (502) 564-4606 or the National Board at 1-800-22teach. Teachers interested in becoming NBPTS certified may sign up as a candidate between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010. Please note that many of the fees may be offset by subsidy funds. Mentoring Services for new NBPTS Candidates. KRS 161.133 established the Teachers’ National Certification Incentive Trust Fund which provides for National Board certified teachers to serve as mentors to NBC candidates. The West Kentucky Educational Cooperative is a Kentucky Mentor Service Provider. In partnership with Kentucky’s Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB), WKEC will provide, free of charge, mentoring services to teacher-candidates in preparation for National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification. Trained mentors will work with candidates for a minimum of 36 hours to complete certification requirements, including portfolio submission and assessment. Mentors and candidates will be paired in late August or September of 2010. Candidates from WKEC member districts may request mentoring services by contacting Todd Warren, WKEC program coordinator at (270) 809-3493 or
